BLOODY GOOD

Kevin Spacey takes on Richard III

The Ricardian Society dedicates itself to the belief that Richard III is one of history’s most misunderstood and maltreated figures. His position as a scheming, conniving, perverse multiple murderer? Pure Tudor propaganda. Shakespeare, however, was not a Ricardian and his portrait of Richard offers one of the stage’s most delicious examples of villainy. The latest to don his hunchback is Kevin Spacey, in the Bridge Project’s final overpass at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The British and American cast who aid his rise to power and eventual fall include Haydn Gwynne, Gemma Jones, and Chuck Iwuji. Under Sam Mendes’s direction, this modern-dress War of the Roses should send the petals flying.
